Carbon Fiber Automotive

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer is used extensively in high-end automobile racing. The high cost of carbon fiber is mitigated by the material's unsurpassed strength-to-weight ratio, and low weight is essential for high-performance automobile racing. Racecar manufacturers have also developed methods to give carbon fiber pieces strength in a certain direction, making it strong in a load-bearing direction, but weak in directions where little or no load would be placed on the member. On the converse, manufacturers developed omnidirectional carbon fiber weaves that apply strength in all directions. This type of carbon fiber assembly is most widely used in the "safety cell" monocoque chassis assembly of high-performance racecars.

Carbon Fiber seriously being considered as a solution to oil prices

Unless you've been living under a rock, you probably know that gas prices have been rising rapidly -- and aren't likely to go down again. What's driving the price increase? There are a number of factors, but one of the biggest is demand. Oil, which is used to make gasoline, costs a lot of money because the many people who need it are willing to pay. While it used to be that only a few countries, mainly in the West, had enough wealth to have widespread car ownership, countries like India and China are experiencing major growth in car ownership, causing more demand and increased prices for gas and oil. What's worse than the high cost of oil is the fact that it's a finite resource: We're going to run out one day. With more and more oil being used, the pressure is on to cut back, lessen demand, bring down prices and extend the planet's supply. ...

2000 has been a decade of research and development for carbon fiber. Now the result are reaching the market. Where carbon fiber reduces your gas bill and paying for a more stylish car.
“The carbon fiber industry is growing, with steadily increasing demand from the aerospace and defense markets as well as smaller markets such as sporting goods and construction materials. Infiltration of the automotive market remains a challenge, however, and so the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) FreedomCAR program has made the development of low-cost automotive-grade carbon fiber its highest priority for materials research. The DOE effort is currently focused on three objectives: developing low-cost carbon fiber precursors, low-cost conversion methods, and high-throughput fabrication processes.”

Last Month's Big Carbon Fiber Event

It is post-event, but the west-coast carbon fiber event of the year ...

(PRWEB) August 13, 2009 - IntertechPira's Global Outlook for Carbon Fiber is in its 12th year now making it the most successful international carbon fiber event of its kind. This year's event will take place at the Hilton Torrey Pines - that's right, the same place Tiger won the US Open. Join us in La Jolla, California this September for the first carbon fiber conference of the year. Chaired by Dan Pappano of Hexcel and Ben Rasmussen of BMR Associates, and featuring over 18 presentations and numerous networking functions, this is a must attend event for those involved in the carbon fiber industry. Presentations will cover global/regional supply and demand of carbon fiber, impact of economic developments on supply/demand, new developments in established and emerging markets, recycling carbon fiber and new applications, production challenges and opportunities, and new production methods and technical developments.
